Be merciful to the one who is under you and the one who is above you will be merciful to you; compare his forgetfulness with your forgetfulness and his disobedience with your disobedience to you Lord, and his need of your mercy to your need of the mercy of your Lord.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Social Interaction And Mingling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of showing mercy and compassion towards others. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The first part of the Hadith states,
Be merciful to the one who is under you and the one who is above you will be merciful to you.
Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to display kindness and compassion towards those who are less fortunate or hold a lower position than us. By treating them with mercy, we create an atmosphere of empathy and understanding, fostering a society where everyone is cared for and supported.
This teaching aligns with the Quranic principle of treating others with kindness and compassion. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:54),
And when those who believe in Our verses come to you, say, 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.'
By showing mercy to those who are under our authority or influence, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also create a ripple effect of compassion. When we treat others with kindness, it inspires them to do the same, ultimately leading to a more harmonious and compassionate society.
The second part of the Hadith states,
Compare his forgetfulness with your forgetfulness and his disobedience with your disobedience to your Lord, and his need of your mercy to your need of the mercy of your Lord.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to reflect upon our own shortcomings and mistakes before passing judgment on others. We are reminded to be forgiving and understanding, just as we hope for forgiveness and understanding from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This teaching finds resonance in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and mercy. In Surah An-Nur (24:22), Allah says,
Let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
By reflecting on our own flaws and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we develop a sense of humility and empathy towards others. This understanding allows us to extend mercy and compassion to those who may have erred or fallen short, recognizing that we too are in need of forgiveness and mercy from our Lord.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to embody the qualities of mercy, compassion, and forgiveness in their interactions with others. By treating those under our care with kindness and understanding, and by reflecting on our own imperfections before judging others, we can create a society that is built on love, empathy, and mutual respect.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice mercy and compassion in our daily lives, and may He shower His mercy upon us in this world and the Hereafter.
