Hadith #7295

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِلْمُ بِلاعَمَل وَبالٌ۔" This can be translated as,

Knowledge without action is a plague.

This enlightening saying highlights the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also putting it into practice.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "العِلْمُ" refers to knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. It is the understanding and awareness of facts, information, and principles. "بِلاعَمَل" means without action or without implementation. It signifies the failure to apply the knowledge one possesses. Lastly, "وَبالٌ۔" can be translated as a plague, a disease, or a calamity. It emphasizes the negative consequences of having knowledge but not acting upon it.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of combining knowledge with action. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 44, Allah says,

Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?

This verse highlights the hypocrisy of those who preach righteousness but fail to practice it themselves. It serves as a reminder that knowledge should be accompanied by action.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 5:

The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse illustrates the futility of possessing knowledge without acting upon it. Just as a donkey carries books without benefiting from their contents, those who possess knowledge but do not act upon it are in a state of ignorance and deprivation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to not only seek knowledge but also to implement it in their lives. Knowledge is not meant to be a mere intellectual pursuit; rather, it should be a transformative force that guides our actions and shapes our character. The consequences of neglecting the implementation of knowledge are far-reaching. It hinders personal development, weakens the community, and distances us from the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). On the other hand, when knowledge is coupled with action, it becomes a means of attaining closeness to Allah and achieving success in this world and the hereafter.

Let us reflect on our own lives and assess whether we are truly embodying the teachings of Islam. Are we acquiring knowledge but neglecting to act upon it? Are we allowing our egos to hinder our growth and prevent us from implementing what we know to be right? It is essential for us to constantly strive to bridge the gap between knowledge and action, for it is through this integration that we can truly benefit ourselves and society as a whole.
