O son of Adam, do not inflict the worry of the day that has not yet come on the day which has already come, because if that day be in your life Allah will bestow its livelihood also.

O son of Adam, do not inflict the worry of the day that has not yet come...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #267)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us, the Muslims, not to burden ourselves with the worries of the future, especially when we are already facing the challenges of the present. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that if a particular day is destined to be a part of our life, then Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will provide us with the sustenance and provisions necessary for that day.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (hamm) "هَمَّ" refers to worry or anxiety, while (yawmika) "يَوْمِكَ" means your day. The phrase (alladhi lam ya'tika) "الَّذِي لَمْ يَأْتِكَ" translates to

that which has not yet come to you,

and (alladhi qad ataaka) "الَّذِي قَدْ أَتَاكَ" means

that which has already come to you.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62:11),

And when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, 'What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for our sustenance and provisions. It reminds us that whatever distractions or worldly pursuits we may be engrossed in, the ultimate provider is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We should not allow the worries of the future to overshadow the blessings and provisions that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has already bestowed upon us.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:62), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah increases provision for whom He wills and restricts it for whom He wills. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment.

This verse reminds us that it is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) who determines our provisions and sustenance. We should not become overly attached to the temporary pleasures and enjoyments of this world. Instead, we should focus on the Hereafter, where true and everlasting joy awaits us.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is a powerful reminder for us to live in the present moment and trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) divine wisdom and providence. By not burdening ourselves with worries about the future, we can fully immerse ourselves in the tasks and challenges of the present, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will provide for us when the time comes.

This Hadith also teaches us the importance of tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and contentment with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has already bestowed upon us. We should strive to strike a balance between planning for the future and trusting in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) divine decree. By doing so, we can alleviate unnecessary stress and anxiety, and find peace and tranquility in our hearts.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to live in the present moment and trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) divine providence. We should not allow the worries of the future to overshadow the blessings and provisions that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has already bestowed upon us. By relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and being content with His decree, we can find peace, tranquility, and fulfillment in our lives as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
