If I were to strike the nose of a believer to make him hate me he would still not hate me, and if I were to bestow the whole world to a hypocrite to make him love me he would still not love me.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a beautiful saying that highlights the unwavering loyalty and devotion of a true believer, as well as the inherent hypocrisy of those who claim to be believers but lack sincerity in their faith.

Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. The word (khayshooma) "خَيْشُومَ" refers to the nose, which symbolizes the face or the essence of a person. The term (mu'min) "مُؤْمِنِ" refers to a true believer, someone who has faith in Allah and follows the teachings of Islam sincerely. On the other hand, the word (munafiq) "مُنَافِقِ" refers to a hypocrite, someone who outwardly claims to be a believer but inwardly lacks faith and sincerity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that even if he were to physically strike the face of a believer, it would not cause that believer to hate him. This statement emphasizes the unshakable love and loyalty that a true believer has for the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the Prophet Muhammad ). It demonstrates the deep connection and unwavering devotion that exists between the believers and the Ahl al-Bayt, regardless of any external actions or circumstances.

To further understand the significance of this statement, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Tawbah, verse 24:

Say, [O Muhammad], 'If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.'

This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing the love and devotion to Allah and His Messenger over any worldly attachments. It emphasizes that true believers are willing to sacrifice their personal relationships, wealth, and comfort for the sake of Allah and His Messenger. Therefore, the love and loyalty towards the Ahl al-Bayt, including Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is rooted in their unwavering commitment to the teachings of Islam and their willingness to sacrifice everything for the sake of Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that even if he were to bestow the entire world upon a hypocrite, it would not make that hypocrite love him. This statement highlights the inherent hypocrisy and insincerity of those who claim to be believers but lack true faith in their hearts. It demonstrates that material possessions and worldly gains cannot buy genuine love and loyalty. True love and devotion can only be earned through sincerity, righteousness, and adherence to the teachings of Islam.

The Quran also addresses the issue of hypocrisy in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 8, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers.

This verse highlights the existence of hypocrites who claim to have faith but lack sincerity in their hearts. It reminds us that true faith is not merely a verbal declaration, but it is a state of the heart that is reflected in one's actions and intentions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize their love and devotion to Allah and His Messenger over any worldly attachments. It emphasizes the unbreakable bond between the believers and the Ahl al-Bayt, rooted in their unwavering commitment to the teachings of Islam. It also exposes the hypocrisy and insincerity of those who claim to be believers but lack true faith in their hearts. May we all strive to embody the qualities of true believers and seek the pleasure of Allah in all aspects of our lives.
