(Ghurar al-Hikam: Treachery)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

He who is certain about the place of [final] return does not act treacherously.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having certainty in the belief of the Hereafter and the consequences of one's actions in the eternal life.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ghadar) "غَدَرَ" refers to treachery or betrayal. It implies deceitful actions that harm others by breaking trust. The word (a'iqana) "أيْقَنَ" means to be certain or have firm conviction. And finally, (al-marji') "المَرْجِعِ" refers to the place of return, which in this context refers to the Hereafter.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 281:

And fear the Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be treated unjustly.

This verse highlights the Day of Judgment, where every individual will be held accountable for their actions in this world. It serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences and that we will be recompensed accordingly.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun, Ayah 115, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Did you think that We created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?

This verse emphasizes the purpose of our creation and the reality of our return to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) after death. It reminds us that our existence in this world is not without purpose, and we will be held accountable for our actions.

Reflecting on the Hadith in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that having certainty in the Hereafter is a fundamental aspect of faith. When one firmly believes in the Day of Judgment and the consequences of their actions, they are less likely to engage in treacherous behavior. This certainty acts as a deterrent, preventing individuals from betraying the trust of others or acting deceitfully.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that a person who truly believes in the Hereafter will not engage in treachery. This is because they are aware that their actions will be accounted for and that they will be held responsible for their deeds. Their certainty in the final return motivates them to act with integrity, honesty, and loyalty towards others.

Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions and intentions. It encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our behavior in the Hereafter. By maintaining a strong belief in the final return, we are motivated to act in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial to society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of having certainty in the Hereafter and the impact it has on our actions. By firmly believing in the final return, we are discouraged from engaging in treacherous behavior and are motivated to act with integrity and honesty. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to always remember the consequences of our actions and to strive for righteousness in this world and the Hereafter.
