Hadith #8565

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure family, his noble companions, and all those who follow their righteous path.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اِفْكِرْ تُفِقْ۔" which translates to

Reflect and you will awaken [and become alert].

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ifkir) "اِفْكِرْ" is derived from the root word (fakara) "فَكَرَ", which means to think deeply, ponder, and reflect. It encompasses the act of contemplating and using one's intellect to gain understanding and insight. Reflecting upon the signs of Allah's creation and His divine guidance is a fundamental aspect of our faith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to engage in deep thinking and reflection in numerous verses of the Quran.

In Surah Al-Imran (3:190), Allah says,

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

This verse emphasizes the importance of contemplating the natural world and the celestial bodies as a means to recognize the existence and greatness of Allah. By reflecting upon the intricate design and balance in the universe, we awaken our hearts and minds to the reality of His existence.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46), Allah states,

Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.

This verse highlights the significance of using our intellect and reasoning abilities to comprehend the signs of Allah. It reminds us that true blindness lies in the hearts that fail to reflect and understand the truth.

The second part of the Hadith states, (tufiq) "تُفِقْ", which can be translated as "awaken" or "become alert." This word carries the connotation of being awakened from a state of heedlessness or unawareness. It implies a transformation from a state of spiritual slumber to one of heightened awareness and consciousness. This awakening is a result of sincere reflection and contemplation.

In Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah says,

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.

This verse highlights the importance of using our faculties of reason and intellect to avoid falling into a state of spiritual deafness and dumbness. By reflecting upon the signs of Allah and seeking knowledge, we awaken our hearts and minds to the truth and become alert to our purpose in life.
