(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ كَثُرَ اِعْتِبارُهُ قَلَّ عِثارُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

One whose consideration [of past events from which he draws lessons] increases, his mistakes decrease.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "اِعْتِبارُهُ" in this Hadith refers to the act of reflecting upon and contemplating past events, actions, and experiences. It entails introspection and deep thoughtfulness in order to gain wisdom and learn from one's past. By engaging in this process of "اِعْتِبارُ," one is able to draw valuable lessons and insights that can guide them towards making better choices and avoiding mistakes in the future.

The Hadith emphasizes that as one's consideration and reflection increase, their mistakes decrease. This means that the more one reflects upon their past actions and experiences, the more they become aware of their shortcomings and are motivated to rectify them. Through self-reflection, individuals can identify patterns of behavior, recognize their weaknesses, and strive to improve themselves.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the importance of self-reflection and drawing lessons from past events. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse encourages believers to reflect upon their actions and consider the consequences of their deeds in order to improve themselves and seek Allah's forgiveness.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Imran (3:191), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,

Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse highlights the importance of pondering over the signs of Allah's creation and contemplating the purpose behind our existence. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of our responsibilities and strive to avoid mistakes.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we realize that self-reflection is a fundamental aspect of personal growth and spiritual development. When we engage in deep contemplation and introspection, we become more conscious of our actions, intentions, and their consequences. This heightened awareness enables us to make better choices, avoid repeating past mistakes, and strive for self-improvement.

Furthermore, the Hadith teaches us that the process of "اِعْتِبارُ" is not limited to our own experiences but extends to learning from the mistakes and successes of others as well. By observing the lives of righteous individuals mentioned in the Quran, such as the prophets and their companions, we can gain valuable insights and guidance. Their stories serve as a source of inspiration and provide us with practical examples of how to navigate through life's challenges and avoid pitfalls.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and drawing lessons from past events. By increasing our consideration and introspection, we can decrease our mistakes and strive for personal growth. This process of "اِعْتِبارُ" aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourages believers to reflect upon their actions, seek wisdom from the signs of Allah's creation, and learn from the experiences of righteous individuals. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to engage in deep self-reflection and continuously strive for self-improvement.
