مَنْ أنِفَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ اِضْطَرَّهُ ذلِكَ إلى عَمَل خَيْر مِنْهُ۔
One who is not pleased with his action, is forced to perform even better.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man anifa min amalihi idtarrahu dhalika ila amal khayr minhu.
This hadith emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. Let us delve into the key words of this profound saying to gain a deeper understanding.
The word "anifa" refers to someone who is dissatisfied or displeased with their own actions. It signifies a sense of remorse or regret for not performing at their best. This feeling of dissatisfaction is a catalyst for change and motivates a person to strive for improvement.
The term "idtarrahu" means to be compelled or forced. It implies that the individual who is dissatisfied with their actions is compelled by their own conscience to seek a higher level of excellence. This compulsion is not external, but rather an internal drive that pushes one to surpass their previous efforts.
The phrase "amal khayr" translates to "even better action." It signifies that the individual, driven by their dissatisfaction, is compelled to perform deeds that are superior in quality and reward. This Hadith teaches us that self-criticism and a desire for self-improvement are essential for personal growth and spiritual development.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all our endeavors. When we are dissatisfied with our actions, we should turn to Allah for strength and assistance in performing even better.
Another verse that complements this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:62), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.
This verse reminds us that Allah does not burden us with more than we can bear. When we feel compelled to perform better, we should trust in Allah's wisdom and rely on His support to help us achieve our goals.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to reflect on our actions and strive for improvement. It reminds us that dissatisfaction with our own performance should not lead to despair, but rather to a renewed determination to excel. By acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking Allah's guidance, we can transform our weaknesses into strengths and elevate ourselves to a higher level of righteousness.
This Hadith also highlights the profound knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His deep understanding of human nature and spirituality enables him to provide guidance that resonates with Muslims of all backgrounds. As followers of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we should strive to emulate his qualities of self-reflection, self-improvement, and a constant desire to perform better in all aspects of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of self-criticism and the drive for self-improvement. It reminds us to seek Allah's guidance and support when we are dissatisfied with our actions. By reflecting on our shortcomings and striving for excellence, we can transform our weaknesses into strengths and become better Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to constantly improve ourselves and be pleased with our actions.
