(Ghurar al-Hikam: Near Relatives And Keeping Or Cutting Off Ties With Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Man dayyahul aqrabu, uqeeha lahu al-ab'ad.

This Hadith emphasizes the divine justice and support of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for those who are neglected or abandoned by their close relatives or loved ones. It highlights that when someone is forsaken by their near ones, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will provide them with support and assistance from distant and unrelated individuals.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word "dayyahul" refers to someone who is neglected, abandoned, or left behind by their close relatives or loved ones. This neglect can manifest in various forms, such as emotional abandonment, lack of support, or even betrayal. The term "aqrab" signifies the near ones, who are expected to provide care, love, and support.

The phrase "uqeeha lahu al-ab'ad" conveys the idea that when someone is forsaken by their near ones, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will ensure that they are supported and cherished by distant and unrelated individuals. This divine intervention serves as a reminder that Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) justice prevails, even in situations where one may feel abandoned or betrayed by their own kin.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah An-Nisa (4:36),

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our obligations towards our relatives, but it also reminds us of our responsibility towards those who are distant and unrelated.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:23-24), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us to be kind and respectful to our parents, and not to say even a word of disrespect to them. However, if our parents or close relatives fail to fulfill their duties towards us, it does not mean that we are left without support. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us that He is always there for us, and He will provide us with assistance and guidance, even if it comes from unexpected sources.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of maintaining strong family ties and fulfilling our obligations towards our close relatives. However, it also serves as a source of comfort for those who may have experienced neglect or abandonment from their near ones. It assures them that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) sees their struggles and will provide them with support and assistance, even from those who are unrelated or distant.

This Hadith teaches us the profound lesson of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of hardship and disappointment. It encourages us to have faith in His divine justice and to trust that He will never abandon us, even if our loved ones do. It also reminds us of the importance of being compassionate and supportive towards those who may feel neglected or abandoned by their near ones, as we may be the means through which Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) provides them with solace and support.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) divine justice and support for those who are neglected or abandoned by their close relatives. It teaches us to rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of hardship and to have faith that He will provide us with assistance, even from unexpected sources. May we always strive to fulfill our obligations towards our near ones and be a source of support and comfort for those who may feel neglected or abandoned.
