Allah, the Glorified, has laid down reward for obedience to Him and punishment for committing sins against Him in order to save men from His chastisement and to drive them towards Paradise.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #368)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the divine system of reward and punishment established by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to guide and motivate His servants towards obedience and righteousness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has set forth rewards for those who obey Him and punishments for those who disobey Him. This system is designed to protect humanity from the consequences of their sins and to lead them towards the ultimate goal of Paradise.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and concepts it presents. The word "thawab" refers to the reward or recompense that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His obedient servants. It signifies the blessings, favors, and eternal delights that await those who strive to fulfill their obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). On the other hand, the word "iqaab" refers to the punishment or retribution that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) inflicts upon those who commit sins and transgress against His commandments.
The divine system of reward and punishment is not arbitrary, but rather a manifestation of Allah's mercy and justice. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rewards His servants to motivate them towards obedience and righteousness. He promises Paradise, a place of eternal bliss and fulfillment, as a reward for those who strive to please Him. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 52:17-18)
Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure, enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hellfire.
Furthermore, the divine system of reward and punishment serves as a deterrent against disobedience and sin. The fear of punishment acts as a reminder and a deterrent, preventing individuals from engaging in actions that would lead to their own spiritual and moral downfall. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in the Quran, (Quran 3:131)
And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers.
This system of reward and punishment is a reflection of Allah's wisdom and His knowledge of human nature. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) knows that human beings are motivated by incentives and consequences. By establishing this system, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guides His servants towards righteousness and protects them from the harmful consequences of their own actions.
Moreover, the divine system of reward and punishment is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and compassion towards His creation. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) desires the well-being and salvation of His servants, and thus provides them with the opportunity to earn rewards and avoid punishment. This system is a testament to Allah's infinite mercy and His desire to guide His servants towards the path of righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the divine system of reward and punishment established by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to guide and motivate His servants towards obedience and righteousness. This system is a reflection of Allah's mercy, justice, and wisdom. It serves as a reminder of the eternal rewards that await those who strive to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and as a deterrent against disobedience and sin. Muslims should reflect upon this Hadith and strive to earn the rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through their obedience and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
