(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

التَّرَوّي فِي القَوْلِ يُؤْمِنُ الزَّلَلَ۔

This can be translated as,

Deliberation in speech saves one from error.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (tarawwi) "تَرَوّي" in this Hadith refers to the act of carefully considering and reflecting upon one's words before speaking. It implies taking the time to ponder and choose the most appropriate words, ensuring that they are accurate, truthful, and beneficial. This level of deliberation in speech is a virtue that leads to protection from errors and mistakes.

The importance of thoughtful speech is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words wisely and speak in a manner that is pleasing to Allah, as Satan seeks to create discord through divisive speech.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse is a testament to the impeccable character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who was known for his wisdom and eloquence in speech. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for excellence in their speech and conduct, following the example of the Prophet ().

Deliberation in speech not only safeguards one from errors but also has far-reaching consequences. It fosters effective communication, prevents misunderstandings, and promotes harmony within relationships. When we carefully choose our words, considering their impact and potential consequences, we are more likely to convey our thoughts and intentions accurately and respectfully.

Moreover, thoughtful speech reflects the depth of one's knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his profound knowledge and wisdom. His words were carefully chosen and carried immense weight. By emphasizing the importance of deliberation in speech, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of knowledge and its proper application in our interactions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of thoughtful speech and the need to reflect before we speak. It reminds us to choose our words wisely, considering their impact and potential consequences. By doing so, we can avoid errors, promote effective communication, and embody the noble character exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to speak with deliberation and righteousness.
