كَثْرَةُ الوِفاقِ نِفاقٌ۔
Excessive agreement is hypocrisy.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Agreement)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Kathratu al-wifaq nifaq." This concise statement carries a impactful message for all Muslims. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. "Kathratu" refers to excessive or abundant, while "al-wifaq" means agreement or conformity. Lastly, "nifaq" translates to hypocrisy. Thus, the Hadith can be understood as
Excessive agreement is hypocrisy.
To comprehend the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran, which serves as the ultimate source of guidance for Muslims. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 8:
And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers.
This verse highlights the existence of hypocrites who claim faith but lack sincerity in their hearts.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Munafiqun, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of hypocrites. Verse 4 states,
When you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?
From these verses, we understand that hypocrisy involves presenting oneself as a believer while concealing disbelief or insincerity within. It is a form of deception that undermines the unity and sincerity of the Muslim community. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that excessive agreement, without genuine conviction, is a manifestation of hypocrisy.
To illustrate this point, let us consider a scenario. Imagine a person who outwardly agrees with the teachings of Islam, attends religious gatherings, and recites the Quran beautifully. However, their actions contradict their words, as they engage in dishonest business practices, backbite, and neglect their obligations towards Allah and fellow Muslims. Such a person is exhibiting excessive agreement without true faith, falling into the trap of hypocrisy.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be sincere in their beliefs and actions. It encourages us to align our words with our deeds, ensuring that our agreement with Islamic principles is not merely superficial. We must strive for consistency and authenticity in our faith, avoiding the pitfalls of hypocrisy.
This Hadith also emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and introspection. We should constantly examine our intentions and motivations, ensuring that our agreement with Islamic values stems from a genuine desire to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and not from societal pressure or personal gain.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "Kathratu al-wifaq nifaq" warns us against excessive agreement without true conviction, as it leads to hypocrisy. It reminds us to align our words with our actions, to be sincere in our faith, and to constantly reflect on our intentions. May Allah guide us to be true believers, free from hypocrisy, and grant us the strength to live our lives in accordance with His teachings.
