صاحبِ الحُكَماءَ، وجالِسِ الحُلَماءَ، وأعرِضْ عَنِ الدُّنيا تَسْكُنْ جَنَّةَ المأوى۔
Accompany the wise, associate with the forbearing and turn away from this world - you shall dwell in the Garden of the Abode.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to seek the company of the wise, the people of knowledge and wisdom. The word used in the Hadith is (al-hukamaa) "الحُكَماءَ", which refers to those who possess deep understanding, insight, and wisdom. These are the individuals who have acquired knowledge and have the ability to apply it in a wise and beneficial manner.
The importance of seeking the company of the wise is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Kahf (18:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.
This verse encourages Muslims to surround themselves with those who remember Allah and seek His pleasure. By doing so, we can benefit from their wisdom, guidance, and spiritual upliftment.
Furthermore, the Hadith advises Muslims to associate with the forbearing, those who possess patience and self-control. The word used in the Hadith is (al-hulamaa) "الحُلَماءَ", which refers to those who have the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity. They are patient in dealing with others and do not easily lose their temper or become agitated.
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of patience and forbearance. In Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse encourages Muslims to cultivate patience and endurance in their lives, as it is through these qualities that we can overcome challenges and attain success.
Lastly, the Hadith advises Muslims to turn away from the distractions and temptations of this world. It urges us to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits and focus on the eternal abode, the Garden of Paradise. By doing so, we can find tranquility and contentment in the hereafter.
The Quran repeatedly reminds us of the fleeting nature of this world and the importance of prioritizing the hereafter. In Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.
This verse encourages Muslims to strike a balance between the pursuit of worldly provisions and the preparation for the eternal life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides profound guidance for Muslims. It advises us to seek the company of the wise, who possess knowledge and wisdom, to associate with the forbearing, who possess patience and self-control, and to turn away from the distractions of this world. By following these teachings, we can attain spiritual growth, wisdom, and ultimately find solace in the eternal abode of Paradise. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to implement these teachings in our lives.
