— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Stubborn)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The stubborn one has no [valid] opinion.

This short but beautiful Hadith carries a deep message about the importance of humility and open-mindedness in seeking knowledge and understanding.

Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word "al-lajuj" refers to someone who is stubborn, obstinate, or rigid in their thinking. This person is unwilling to consider alternative viewpoints or to accept new information that challenges their preconceived notions. The word "ra'ya" means opinion or viewpoint.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge, being open to learning, and avoiding arrogance and stubbornness. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah says, (Quran 8:46)

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient

This verse reminds us of the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, which includes being open to learning and accepting guidance. Disputing and being stubborn in our opinions can lead to a loss of courage and strength, as it closes our minds to new ideas and perspectives.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:6)

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful

This verse highlights the importance of verifying information and not hastily accepting or rejecting it based on our own biases or preconceived notions. It encourages us to be open-minded and willing to investigate before forming an opinion.

Imam Ali's statement in the Hadith aligns perfectly with these Quranic teachings. It serves as a reminder that stubbornness and rigidity in our thinking can hinder our ability to gain knowledge and understanding. When we are closed off to alternative viewpoints, we limit our growth and prevent ourselves from benefiting from the wisdom and insights of others.

The consequences of being stubborn and refusing to consider different perspectives can be detrimental. It can lead to ignorance, misunderstandings, and even conflicts within the Muslim community. By contrast, adopting a humble and open-minded approach allows us to expand our knowledge, strengthen our faith, and foster unity among Muslims.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his vast knowledge and wisdom. He was a paragon of humility and open-mindedness, always willing to listen and learn from others. His approach to seeking knowledge serves as an inspiration for all Muslims, reminding us to be humble and open to different opinions and perspectives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of avoiding stubbornness and rigidity in our thinking. It reminds us to be open-minded, humble, and willing to consider alternative viewpoints. By doing so, we can expand our knowledge, strengthen our faith, and promote unity within the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and humility to seek knowledge with an open heart and mind.
