صُحْبَةُ الوَليِّ اللَّبيبِ حَياةُ الرُّوحِ۔
Accompanying a wise friend enlivens the soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
صُحْبَةُ الوَليِّ اللَّبيبِ حَياةُ الرُّوحِ۔
This can be translated as,
Accompanying a wise friend enlivens the soul.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
First, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. (suhbah) "صُحْبَةُ" refers to companionship or association. (al-wali) "الوَليِّ" means a wise or knowledgeable friend. (al-labib) "اللَّبيبِ" denotes someone who possesses deep understanding and insight. And (hayat al-ruh) "حَياةُ الرُّوحِ" translates to the enlivenment or revitalization of the soul.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we find numerous verses in the Quran that emphasize the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous and knowledgeable individuals. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Kahf (18:28),
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.
This verse highlights the significance of associating with those who engage in the remembrance of Allah and seek His pleasure.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse emphasizes the importance of obeying Allah and His Messenger, which can be achieved through the company of wise and knowledgeable individuals who guide us towards righteousness and steadfastness.
Now, let us reflect on the connotation of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the transformative power of accompanying a wise friend. Just as physical nourishment is essential for the body, spiritual nourishment is vital for the soul. By surrounding ourselves with individuals who possess deep understanding and insight, our souls are enlivened, and our spiritual growth is nurtured.
When we associate with wise friends, we are exposed to their knowledge, wisdom, and guidance. Their words and actions inspire us to strive for excellence in our faith and character. They serve as a source of motivation and encouragement, guiding us towards the path of righteousness. Through their companionship, we learn valuable lessons, gain new perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of our faith.
Moreover, the company of wise friends helps us navigate the challenges and trials of life. They provide us with guidance and support during difficult times, reminding us of the importance of patience, perseverance, and trust in Allah. Their presence strengthens our faith and enables us to face adversities with resilience and determination.
Conversely, if we surround ourselves with individuals who lack wisdom and knowledge, our souls may become stagnant or even corrupted. The Quran warns us in Surah Al-Furqan (25:27),
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'
This verse serves as a reminder of the regret that will be felt by those who failed to seek the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his righteous companions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with wise and knowledgeable friends. By doing so, our souls are enlivened, and our spiritual growth is nurtured. The Quranic verses mentioned support this exegesis by highlighting the significance of associating with righteous individuals and seeking guidance from Allah and His Messenger. Let us strive to seek the company of those who possess deep understanding and insight, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our companions wisely.
