وَجَدْتُ المُسالَمَةَ مالَمْ يَكُنْ وَهْنٌ فِي الإسْلامِ أنْجَعَ مِنَ القِتالِ۔
I found the reconciliation that does not weaken Islam to be more beneficial than war.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Peace and Reconciliation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
I found the reconciliation that does not weaken Islam to be more beneficial than war.
Let us delve into the meaning of this thought-provoking saying and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (musalamah) "مُسالَمَةَ" in this Hadith refers to reconciliation or peaceful resolution. It signifies the act of settling disputes or conflicts without resorting to violence or warfare. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that such reconciliation should not weaken Islam, meaning it should not compromise the principles and teachings of the religion.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the value of peace and reconciliation. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:61),
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
This verse encourages Muslims to embrace peace and reconciliation when the opportunity arises, placing their trust in Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts within the Muslim community through peaceful means. It encourages Muslims to strive for justice and fairness in resolving disputes, rather than resorting to violence. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the preference for peaceful reconciliation over war.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. His statement in this Hadith reflects his understanding of the broader principles of Islam. He recognized that peaceful resolution, when possible, is more beneficial for the preservation and growth of the religion. By avoiding unnecessary conflicts and promoting reconciliation, the unity of the Muslim community can be maintained, and the message of Islam can spread more effectively.
It is important to note that this Hadith does not advocate for passivity or surrender in the face of oppression or injustice. Islam permits self-defense and fighting against aggression when necessary. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the superiority of peaceful resolution over war, as long as it does not compromise the fundamental principles of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the preference for peaceful reconciliation over war, as long as it does not weaken Islam. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourages Muslims to embrace peace and strive for justice in resolving conflicts. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wise utterance serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize peaceful resolution whenever possible, in order to preserve the unity and integrity of the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the path of peace and reconciliation.
