إغْلِبُوا الجَزَعَ بِالصَّبْرِ، فإنَّ الجَزَعَ يَحبِطُ الأجرَ، ويُعَظِّمُ الفَجيعَةَ۔

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anxiety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us a valuable lesson about the importance of patience in overcoming anxiety. The Arabic word (al-jaza'a) "الجَزَعَ" refers to anxiety, distress, or unease. It is a state of restlessness and worry that can consume a person's mind and heart. On the other hand, (as-sabr) "الصَّبْرِ" means patience, perseverance, and steadfastness in the face of difficulties.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to overcome anxiety with patience because anxiety not only hinders the rewards of our actions but also amplifies the magnitude of the calamity we are facing. When we allow ourselves to be consumed by anxiety, we lose focus and become unable to think clearly and make rational decisions. This can lead to further distress and exacerbate the difficulties we are already facing.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of patience in times of hardship. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds us that patience is not only a means of seeking solace and strength but also a way to seek the assistance and support of Allah.

Another verse that highlights the significance of patience is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:200),

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse encourages us to persevere and endure in the face of challenges, reminding us that success comes to those who remain steadfast and patient.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds us that disputes and disagreements can weaken our resolve and diminish our strength, but through patience, we can regain our composure and find strength in our faith.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can see the profound wisdom behind his words. When we face anxiety and distress, it is natural to feel overwhelmed and lose hope. However, by practicing patience, we can regain control over our emotions and thoughts. Patience allows us to maintain a calm and composed demeanor, enabling us to make better decisions and find solutions to our problems.

Moreover, patience is not simply a passive state of acceptance; it is an active virtue that empowers us to persevere and overcome challenges. It gives us the strength to endure hardships and remain steadfast in our faith. Through patience, we develop resilience and fortitude, which are essential qualities for navigating the trials and tribulations of life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of patience in overcoming anxiety. By practicing patience, we can avoid the negative consequences of anxiety and find solace in the face of calamity. The Quranic verses mentioned provide further support for the significance of patience in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to overcome anxiety with patience and bless us with the rewards of our perseverance.
