مِنْ أعْظَمِ الفَجايِعِ إضاعَةُ الصَّنايِعِ۔
One of the greatest afflictions is wasting good turns [on the undeserving].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنْ أعْظَمِ الفَجايِعِ إضاعَةُ الصَّنايِعِ
which translates to
One of the greatest afflictions is wasting good turns [on the undeserving].
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing the opportunities and blessings that come our way, and not squandering them on those who do not appreciate or deserve them.
To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used. The word (fajā'i) "فَجايِعِ" refers to afflictions or calamities, emphasizing the severity and negative consequences of the action being described. The term (iḍā'atu) "إضاعَةُ" means wasting or squandering, indicating the act of not utilizing something properly or effectively. Lastly, (aṣ-ṣanāyi') "الصَّنايِعِ" refers to good turns or acts of kindness, highlighting the importance of recognizing and appreciating the opportunities to do good.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing our resources and opportunities wisely, and not wasting them. It also highlights the significance of doing good deeds, as Allah loves those who engage in acts of kindness and charity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse reminds us to seek Allah's guidance and support in utilizing our resources effectively and making the most of the opportunities presented to us.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. He highlights the gravity of wasting good turns, which can be understood as squandering opportunities to do good or extending kindness to those who do not appreciate or deserve it. This act not only diminishes the value of the good turn itself but also has negative consequences for both the giver and the recipient.
When we waste our good turns on the undeserving, we are not only depriving those who truly need and deserve our help but also diminishing the impact of our own actions. By directing our efforts and resources towards those who genuinely appreciate and benefit from them, we can maximize the positive outcomes and make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Moreover, wasting good turns can lead to a sense of frustration and disillusionment. When our acts of kindness go unappreciated or are taken for granted, it can discourage us from continuing to do good and extend help to others. This can have a detrimental effect on our own spiritual growth and well-being.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to be discerning in our actions and to prioritize those who truly deserve our assistance and kindness. It encourages us to be mindful of the impact our actions can have and to ensure that our efforts are directed towards those who will truly benefit from them.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of not wasting good turns on the undeserving. It urges us to be discerning in our actions and to prioritize those who genuinely appreciate and benefit from our help. By doing so, we can maximize the positive impact of our deeds and avoid the negative consequences of squandering our resources and opportunities. May Allah guide us to utilize our blessings wisely and to always strive to do good in accordance with His teachings.
