رَحِمَ اللّهُ امْرَءاً قَمَعَ نَوازِ عَ نَفْسِهِ إلَى الهَوى فَصانَها، وقادَها إلى طاعَةِ اللّهِ بِعِنانِها۔
May Allah have mercy on the person who subdues the inclinations of his soul towards vain desires thereby protecting it, and steers it towards the obedience of Allah by its reins.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-control and the struggle against one's base desires. The Imam begins by invoking the mercy of Allah upon those individuals who are able to subdue and restrain the inclinations of their souls towards vain desires. This act of self-discipline and self-restraint is a commendable quality that leads to the protection and preservation of the soul.
The Imam further emphasizes that this self-control is not merely about suppressing or denying one's desires, but rather redirecting them towards the obedience of Allah. By using the metaphor of reins, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) illustrates the importance of steering one's desires in the right direction, under the guidance and control of the Divine commandments.
To understand the significance of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-control and the struggle against one's desires. In Surah Yusuf, verse 53, Allah says,
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and the need for divine intervention and mercy to overcome it.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50, Allah says,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse emphasizes the danger of blindly following one's desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It further emphasizes the importance of self-control and aligning one's desires with the obedience of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith serves as a practical guide for Muslims in their journey towards self-improvement and spiritual growth. It reminds us that the struggle against our base desires is not an easy task, but one that requires continuous effort and vigilance. By subduing our inclinations towards vain desires, we protect our souls from the harmful consequences of indulgence and sin.
Moreover, by steering our desires towards the obedience of Allah, we align ourselves with His divine commandments and seek His pleasure. This act of self-control and obedience leads to spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah. It allows us to develop a strong connection with our Creator and live a life of righteousness and piety.
The consequences of practicing self-control and steering our desires towards the obedience of Allah are profound. It leads to the purification of the soul, the development of moral character, and the attainment of inner peace and tranquility. It enables us to resist temptations and make choices that are pleasing to Allah. Ultimately, it helps us in our journey towards attaining the ultimate goal of Paradise and the pleasure of Allah.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to strive for self-control and to direct their desires towards the obedience of Allah. It highlights the importance of restraining our inclinations towards vain desires and aligning ourselves with the divine commandments. By practicing self-discipline and seeking the mercy of Allah, we can protect and purify our souls, and ultimately attain closeness to our Creator. May Allah grant us the ability to subdue our desires and steer them towards His obedience.
