(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ أحَبَّ نَيْلَ الدَّرَجاتِ العُلى فَلْيَغْلِبِ الهَوى۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of overcoming one's vain desires in order to attain lofty spiritual stations.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (nayl) "نَيْلَ" means to attain or achieve, while (al-darajat) "الدَّرَجاتِ" refers to the stations or levels. The term (al-'ulya) "العُلى" signifies the lofty or high stations. Finally, (al-hawa) "الهَوى" refers to vain desires or whims.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, Ayah 50:

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse highlights the danger of blindly following one's desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It serves as a reminder that those who prioritize their vain desires over the commandments of Allah are led astray. Therefore, to attain the lofty stations, one must overcome their vain desires and align their actions with the guidance of Allah.

Another Quranic verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qiyamah, Ayah 2-3:

But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring. Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa.

These verses remind us of the transient nature of worldly desires and the everlasting nature of the Hereafter. By overcoming our vain desires, we prioritize the eternal rewards of the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world. This mindset enables us to strive for the lofty stations that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) speaks of in the Hadith.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. By urging us to overcome our vain desires, he is highlighting the importance of self-discipline and self-control. Vain desires often lead us astray and hinder our spiritual growth. They distract us from our purpose in life and prevent us from attaining the higher levels of spirituality.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of mastering one's desires. He recognized that true success lies in conquering the ego and aligning oneself with the divine will. By doing so, one can rise above the mundane and reach the elevated stations that Allah has prepared for His devoted servants.

The consequences of following this advice are far-reaching. Overcoming vain desires allows us to develop a stronger connection with Allah, as we prioritize His pleasure over our own fleeting desires. It enables us to make choices that are in line with His commandments and seek His guidance in every aspect of our lives. This, in turn, leads to a life of purpose, contentment, and spiritual fulfillment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to overcome their vain desires in order to attain the lofty stations in the sight of Allah. By aligning our actions with His guidance and prioritizing the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world, we can strive towards spiritual growth and ultimate success. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our vain desires and attain the highest levels of spirituality.
