Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الدّينُ أفْضَلُ مَطْلُوب۔" This can be translated as,

Religion is the greatest pursuit.

Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (deen) "دين" in Arabic refers to religion, faith, or way of life. It encompasses one's beliefs, practices, and moral values. It is the path that guides individuals towards righteousness and the worship of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The pursuit of religion is the ultimate goal and purpose of human existence.

The word (afdal) "أفْضَلُ" means the best or the greatest. It emphasizes the superiority and excellence of religion as compared to other pursuits in life. It signifies that religion surpasses all other endeavors in terms of importance, significance, and value.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 16:97)

Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.

This verse highlights that righteousness, which is an integral part of religion, leads to a good and fulfilling life. It brings contentment, peace, and blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through the pursuit of religion that we can attain true success and happiness in this world and the hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:10)

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of brotherhood and unity among believers. Religion teaches us to treat one another with kindness, compassion, and justice. It encourages us to resolve conflicts and disputes in a peaceful and just manner. By following the teachings of our religion, we can establish harmonious relationships and create a just society.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that the pursuit of religion should be our foremost priority. It should guide our actions, decisions, and interactions with others. By prioritizing our faith, we can lead a purposeful and meaningful life, fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our fellow human beings.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and understanding of religion. He exemplified the teachings of Islam through his actions and words. His life serves as an inspiration for Muslims to strive for excellence in their pursuit of religion.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that religion is the greatest pursuit in life. It encompasses our beliefs, practices, and moral values. By prioritizing our faith, we can lead a righteous and fulfilling life, attaining success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of true religion and grant us the wisdom to understand its significance.
