اَلْحَسَدُ أحَدُ العَذابَيْنِ۔
Jealousy is one of the two torments.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Jealousy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-Hasadu ahdul 'athabayn," which translates to
Jealousy is one of the two torments.
This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of jealousy and its consequences. To understand the significance of this Hadith, we must delve into the meanings of the key words and explore their implications in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the word "hasad" which translates to "jealousy." Jealousy is an intense feeling of resentment or envy towards someone who possesses something desirable. It stems from a sense of discontentment and a desire to possess what others have. Jealousy is a negative emotion that can consume an individual, leading to harmful actions and a disturbed state of mind.
The word "athabayn" means "two torments" or "two punishments." This indicates that jealousy is not only a torment in and of itself, but it also leads to further punishment or torment. It is important to note that the Hadith does not explicitly mention the second torment, leaving it open to interpretation. However, it can be understood that the second torment is the consequence or result of jealousy.
To gain a deeper understanding of the gravity of jealousy, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:105), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And never will Allah grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of blessings and favors. Jealousy arises when individuals fail to recognize that every blessing comes from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and that He bestows His favors upon whom He wills.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Falaq (113:5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
From the evil of an envier when he envies.
This verse highlights the evil nature of envy and the harm it can cause. Jealousy not only harms the one who harbors it but also affects the person towards whom it is directed. It creates a toxic environment of negativity and ill-will, leading to the deterioration of relationships and the overall well-being of individuals.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to guard themselves against the destructive nature of jealousy. It urges us to cultivate contentment and gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Instead of being envious of others, we should focus on improving ourselves and using our blessings to benefit others.
Jealousy not only harms our spiritual well-being but also has detrimental effects on our worldly affairs. It hinders personal growth, fosters animosity, and creates divisions within communities. By reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quranic verses, Muslims are reminded to strive for self-improvement, develop a sense of contentment, and foster a spirit of unity and brotherhood.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the destructive nature of jealousy and its consequences. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to guard themselves against this negative emotion and strive for contentment and gratitude. By doing so, we can cultivate a harmonious and prosperous society, free from the torment of jealousy. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the evils of jealousy and grant us the ability to appreciate and celebrate the blessings of others.
