Gratitude is the embellishment of comfort and the fortification of blessing.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Gratitude is the embellishment of comfort and the fortification of blessing.
This impactful Hadith highlights the importance of expressing gratitude and its impact on our lives. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, drawing upon the teachings of the Quran.
The word "shukr" in Arabic refers to gratitude or thankfulness. It is derived from the root word "shakara," which means to acknowledge, appreciate, and recognize the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Gratitude is not merely a verbal expression; it is a state of the heart that manifests in our actions and attitudes towards Allah and His creation.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of gratitude in numerous verses of the Quran. For example, in Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah says,
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings from Allah. When we acknowledge and appreciate the blessings we have been given, Allah bestows upon us even more.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl (16:18), Allah states,
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse reminds us that the blessings of Allah are countless and beyond our ability to fully comprehend. Therefore, expressing gratitude for even the smallest blessings is essential.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes gratitude as the "embellishment of comfort." This implies that gratitude enhances and beautifies our state of contentment and satisfaction. When we are grateful for what we have, we are able to find peace and tranquility in our lives, regardless of the challenges we may face. Gratitude allows us to focus on the positives and appreciate the blessings that surround us, leading to a sense of inner peace and well-being.
Moreover, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) refers to gratitude as the "fortification of blessing." This suggests that gratitude serves as a protective shield for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. When we express gratitude for the blessings we have, we are less likely to take them for granted or misuse them. Gratitude acts as a safeguard, ensuring that we value and preserve the blessings in our lives.
Practicing gratitude has profound consequences in our lives. It cultivates a positive mindset, increases our resilience in the face of difficulties, and strengthens our relationship with Allah. When we are grateful, we recognize that every blessing is a gift from Allah, and this awareness fosters humility and a sense of dependence on Him.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of expressing gratitude in our daily lives. Gratitude is not limited to specific occasions or moments of abundance; it is a continuous state of appreciation for the blessings, both big and small, that Allah has bestowed upon us. Let us strive to adorn our lives with the beauty of gratitude and fortify our blessings through its practice. May Allah grant us the ability to be grateful and may He increase us in His blessings.
