Hadith #6380

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of knowledge in worship. The Imam compares a worshipper without knowledge to a donkey that tirelessly circles a mill but remains stagnant in its position. To fully comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their significance.

The word (muta'abbid) "مُتَعَبِّدُ" refers to a worshipper, someone who engages in acts of devotion and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This term encompasses various acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity. However, the Imam warns that mere engagement in these acts without knowledge is futile and ineffective.

The word (ghayr) "غَيْرِ" means "without" or "lacking." In this context, it emphasizes the absence of knowledge. The Imam is highlighting the importance of seeking knowledge alongside acts of worship.

The word (ilm) "عِلْم" means knowledge. It refers to the understanding and comprehension of religious teachings, principles, and laws. Knowledge is the key that unlocks the true essence of worship and enables a person to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with sincerity and wisdom.

To further emphasize the significance of knowledge in worship, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9):

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse clearly establishes the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who lack it. It highlights the distinction between a worshipper who seeks knowledge and one who does not.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse underscores the elevated status of those who combine faith with knowledge. It affirms that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and growth.

Reflecting upon the Hadith, we understand that a worshipper without knowledge remains stagnant in their spiritual journey. They may engage in acts of worship, but their lack of understanding prevents them from truly benefiting from these actions. Their worship becomes mechanical and devoid of true meaning.

On the other hand, a worshipper who seeks knowledge alongside their acts of devotion is like a well-functioning mill. They not only engage in acts of worship but also understand the purpose and significance behind them. Their worship becomes a transformative experience, leading to personal growth and a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) motivates us to strive for knowledge in our worship. By seeking knowledge, we gain a deeper understanding of our faith, enabling us to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with sincerity and wisdom. Knowledge empowers us to navigate the complexities of life, make informed decisions, and fulfill our duties as Muslims.

The consequences of neglecting knowledge in worship are profound. Without knowledge, we risk falling into ignorance, misunderstanding, and even misguidance. Our worship may become ritualistic, lacking the spiritual essence that stems from true understanding. We may also be susceptible to following baseless traditions or engaging in actions that contradict the teachings of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to seek knowledge alongside their acts of worship. It emphasizes that true worship is not limited to performing rituals but encompasses a deep understanding of the faith. By seeking knowledge, we can elevate our worship, strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and lead a more fulfilling and purposeful life as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and worship Him with sincerity.
