دَواءُ النَّفْسِ الصَّوْمُ عَنِ الهَوى والْحِمْيَةُ عَنْ لَذّاتِ الدُّنيا۔
The cure of the soul is abstaining from vain desires and abstinence from the pleasures of this world.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The cure of the soul is abstaining from vain desires and abstinence from the pleasures of this world.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-restraint and detachment from worldly temptations in order to attain spiritual healing and growth.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (sawm) "صَوْمُ" refers to fasting or abstaining from something. In this context, it signifies abstaining from vain desires, which are the base desires of the ego that lead one away from the path of righteousness. The word (hawa) "هَوَى" refers to whims and desires that are driven by one's lower self, often leading to sinful actions. The word (himyah) "حِمْيَةُ" refers to abstaining or refraining from something. In this Hadith, it signifies abstinence from the pleasures and attractions of this worldly life, which distract one from focusing on their spiritual development.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse emphasizes the importance of prioritizing spiritual nourishment over worldly desires. By restraining ourselves from indulging in vain desires and materialistic pleasures, we can focus on cultivating piety and righteousness, which is the true provision for our souls.
In Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse reminds us that the pleasures and attractions of this world are temporary and fleeting. They may bring temporary satisfaction, but they do not provide lasting fulfillment or spiritual growth. By abstaining from these worldly pleasures, we detach ourselves from the transient nature of this life and focus on the eternal rewards of the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over worldly desires. When we indulge in vain desires and become attached to the pleasures of this world, our souls become diseased and our spiritual growth is hindered. By practicing self-restraint and detachment, we purify our souls and allow them to flourish in the light of faith.
Practically, this Hadith encourages us to reflect on our actions and intentions. It urges us to identify and resist the temptations that lead us astray from the path of righteousness. By fasting from vain desires, we develop self-discipline and strengthen our willpower to resist sinful actions. Additionally, by abstaining from the pleasures of this world, we free ourselves from the distractions that hinder our spiritual progress. This detachment allows us to focus on acts of worship, seeking knowledge, and serving humanity, which are all means of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The consequences of adhering to the teachings of this Hadith are manifold. By curing our souls through self-restraint and detachment, we attain inner peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose. We become more conscious of our actions and intentions, striving to align them with the teachings of Islam. This leads to a heightened spiritual awareness and a stronger connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Moreover, by prioritizing our spiritual growth over worldly desires, we become more resilient in the face of trials and tribulations, as our focus shifts from the temporary to the eternal.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over worldly desires. By abstaining from vain desires and the pleasures of this world, we cure our souls, attain spiritual growth, and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
