(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of tawakkul, which can be translated as "trusting in Allah" or "reliance upon Allah." Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully describes tawakkul as distancing oneself from relying solely on one's own strength and power, and instead, patiently waiting for what is decreed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us examine the key words and their significance. The word "tawakkul" itself is derived from the root word "wakala," which means to entrust or rely upon someone. It implies complete trust and dependence on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all matters of life. The word "tabbari" means to distance oneself or to be free from something. In this context, it signifies distancing oneself from relying on one's own strength and power.

This concept of tawakkul is beautifully emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:2):

Indeed, the believers are only those whose hearts tremble with fear when Allah is mentioned, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely (يَتَوَكَّلُونَ).

Here, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) highlights that true believers are those who rely solely on Allah, recognizing that He is the ultimate source of strength and power. They understand that their own abilities are limited and that true success lies in trusting in Allah's divine decree.

Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq (65:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us:

And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

This verse beautifully illustrates the essence of tawakkul. When we place our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), He becomes sufficient for us. We realize that Allah has a perfect plan for everything, and He will bring about what is best for us, even if it may not align with our own desires or expectations.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying serves as a reminder for all Muslims to let go of their ego and surrender to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By distancing ourselves from relying solely on our own strength and power, we open ourselves up to the infinite wisdom and mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Practicing tawakkul does not mean that we sit idle and do nothing. Rather, it means that we put in our best efforts, while recognizing that the ultimate outcome is in the hands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We strive for excellence in our endeavors, but we do not become attached to the results. We trust that Allah's plan is perfect, and whatever He decrees for us is ultimately for our own benefit.

This concept of tawakkul has profound implications in our lives. It helps us overcome anxiety and worry, as we realize that we are not in control of everything. It instills in us a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the best of planners. It also strengthens our relationship with Allah, as we continuously turn to Him in times of need and seek His guidance and support.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of tawakkul, or trusting in Allah. By distancing ourselves from relying solely on our own strength and power, and patiently waiting for what is brought by divine decree, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran. Tawakkul brings us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), strengthens our faith, and grants us peace and contentment in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with true tawakkul and guide us on the path of righteousness.
