(Ghurar al-Hikam: Fasting)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of fasting of the soul, which refers to restraining the five senses from committing sins and purifying the heart from all motives of evil. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the important words in this Hadith. (fasting of the soul) "صَوْمُ النَّفْسِ" refers to a spiritual fast, an inner purification of the self. (restraining the five senses) "إمْساكُ الحَواسِّ الخَمْسِ" signifies controlling our physical senses, such as sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, from indulging in sinful actions. (from all the sins)
عَنْ سائِرِ المَ آثِمِ
emphasizes the importance of abstaining from all forms of wrongdoing. (emptying the heart of all the motives of evil)
وخُلُوُّ القَلْبِ عَنْ جَميعِ أسْبابِ الشَّرِّ
stresses the need to purify our hearts from any intentions or desires that lead to evil.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the concept of fasting of the soul and the importance of restraining our senses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:201),
Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.
This verse highlights the significance of self-control and mindfulness in resisting the temptations of Satan.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.
This verse reminds us to restrain our senses from making negative assumptions about others, which can lead to sinful behavior.
The exegesis of this Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and self-restraint in our daily lives. Fasting of the soul requires us to be conscious of our actions and to refrain from engaging in any sinful behavior. By restraining our senses, we can prevent ourselves from falling into the traps of temptation and sin.
For example, fasting of the soul entails controlling our gaze and refraining from looking at anything that is forbidden, such as indecent images or inappropriate interactions. This act of self-restraint not only protects our own spiritual well-being but also promotes a healthy and respectful society.
Similarly, fasting of the soul involves controlling our speech and refraining from engaging in backbiting, gossip, or spreading falsehoods. By doing so, we create an environment of trust, respect, and unity among Muslims.
Moreover, fasting of the soul requires us to purify our hearts from any motives or intentions that lead to evil. This means examining our intentions before engaging in any action and ensuring that they are sincere and in accordance with the teachings of Islam. By emptying our hearts of envy, greed, and hatred, we can cultivate qualities such as love, compassion, and generosity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of fasting of the soul, which entails restraining the five senses from committing sins and purifying the heart from all motives of evil. This spiritual fast requires self-discipline, self-restraint, and a conscious effort to align our actions and intentions with the teachings of Islam. By practicing fasting of the soul, we can attain spiritual growth, strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to fast our souls and attain His pleasure.
