فِي العَدْلِ الاِقْتِداءُ بِسُنَّةِ اللّهِ وثَباتُ الدُّوَلِ۔
Following the way of Allah and the stability of nations lies in justice.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Following the way of Allah and the stability of nations lies in justice.
Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us analyze the important words in this Hadith. The word (iqtiḍā') "اقتداء" means to follow or emulate, while (sunnati Allah) "سُنَّةِ اللّهِ" refers to the way or tradition of Allah. The word (thabāt) "ثَباتُ" means stability or firmness, and (ad-dawla) "الدُّوَلِ" refers to nations or societies.
To understand the significance of justice in following the way of Allah and ensuring the stability of nations, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice and its role in maintaining a just and harmonious society.
In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the obligation to settle disputes and conflicts with justice. It emphasizes that justice should prevail even in times of discord and disagreement. By following the path of justice, individuals and societies can achieve stability and unity.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah commands,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against personal interests or relationships. It highlights the need to be just and truthful witnesses, regardless of the consequences. By doing so, individuals contribute to the stability and well-being of society.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that justice is not merely a moral virtue but a fundamental principle that ensures the stability and prosperity of nations. When justice prevails, people feel secure, their rights are protected, and they can live in peace and harmony.
Justice is the foundation upon which societies are built. It ensures fairness in the distribution of resources, opportunities, and rights. It promotes equality, eliminates oppression, and fosters a sense of trust and unity among individuals.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the importance of justice in society. He implemented justice during his caliphate, earning the title of (Commander of the Faithful) "Amir al-Mu'minin". His commitment to justice served as a guiding light for Muslims throughout history.
When justice is upheld, it motivates individuals to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations. It encourages them to contribute positively to society, knowing that their efforts will be recognized and rewarded fairly. Conversely, the absence of justice leads to chaos, inequality, and the erosion of societal bonds.
The consequences of justice or its absence can be seen in the rise and fall of nations throughout history. Societies that prioritize justice and ensure its implementation thrive and prosper. On the other hand, societies that neglect justice suffer from internal conflicts, corruption, and ultimately decline.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of our duty as Muslims to uphold justice in all aspects of our lives. We must strive to be just in our dealings with others, whether in personal relationships, business transactions, or societal matters.
By following the way of Allah, which encompasses justice and fairness, we contribute to the stability and well-being of our communities. We become agents of positive change, working towards a just society that reflects the values and teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of justice in following the way of Allah and ensuring the stability of nations. It reminds us that justice is not only a moral virtue but a fundamental principle that underpins a just and harmonious society. By upholding justice, we contribute to the well-being and prosperity of our communities, following in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of Islam. May Allah guide us all to be just and righteous Muslims.
