(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The conditions of this world are based on convention whereas the conditions of the Hereafter are based on merit.

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the stark contrast between the temporal nature of this world and the eternal nature of the Hereafter.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (conditions) "أحْوالُ" refers to the circumstances, situations, or states that one experiences. It encompasses all aspects of life, including social, economic, and political conditions. (this world) "الدُّنيا" refers to the transient and temporary life we live in, filled with trials, tribulations, and worldly pursuits. On the other hand, (the Hereafter) "الآخِرَةِ" refers to the eternal life that awaits us after death, where our actions in this world will determine our ultimate fate.

The Hadith emphasizes that the conditions of this world are based on convention, meaning that they are shaped by societal norms, cultural practices, and human agreements. These conventions often prioritize material wealth, power, and worldly success. However, the conditions of the Hereafter are based on merit, meaning that they are determined by one's actions, intentions, and adherence to the divine guidance.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the temporary nature of the conditions of this world. It emphasizes that the true purpose of life lies in seeking forgiveness from Allah and striving for His approval, which are the foundations of merit in the Hereafter.

Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that while wealth and worldly possessions may bring temporary adornment to our lives, it is the enduring good deeds that hold true value in the sight of Allah. These good deeds, based on merit, are what will ultimately determine our success in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their actions and intentions in accordance with the teachings of Islam. It encourages us to focus on the eternal consequences of our deeds rather than being solely preoccupied with worldly gains.

By recognizing the transient nature of this world and the everlasting nature of the Hereafter, Muslims are motivated to strive for righteousness, justice, and moral excellence. This Hadith serves as a call to action, urging Muslims to align their lives with the principles of Islam, seeking the pleasure of Allah and the rewards of the Hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the stark contrast between the conditions of this world, which are based on convention, and the conditions of the Hereafter, which are based on merit. It reminds Muslims to prioritize their actions and intentions in accordance with the teachings of Islam, recognizing the transient nature of this world and the everlasting nature of the Hereafter. May Allah guide us to live a life of righteousness and grant us success in the Hereafter.
