(Ghurar al-Hikam: Righteousness And Those Who Prevent It)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنْ أفْضَلِ البِرِّ بِرُّ الأيتامِ
which translates to
One of the best righteous acts is being kind to the orphans.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of showing kindness and compassion towards orphans, highlighting it as a virtuous act in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. (birr) "برّ" refers to acts of righteousness, goodness, and kindness. It encompasses all actions that are pleasing to Allah and beneficial to others. (al-aytam) "الأيتام" refers to orphans, who are children that have lost one or both parents and are in need of care and support.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of caring for orphans and treating them with kindness and compassion. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands Muslims in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 83:
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling the rights of orphans, along with the rights of parents, relatives, and the needy. It is a comprehensive command that encompasses various aspects of kindness and righteousness. By being kind to orphans, we fulfill a duty prescribed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and follow in the footsteps of the righteous.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the significance of being kind to orphans in this Hadith. By highlighting this act as one of the best righteous deeds, he encourages Muslims to prioritize the well-being and care of those who have lost their parents.
When we reflect on the consequences of being kind to orphans, we realize the immense impact it can have on their lives. Orphans often face emotional, financial, and social challenges, and by showing them kindness, we provide them with a sense of belonging, love, and support. This act of kindness can bring joy to their hearts, alleviate their suffering, and help them grow into confident and productive members of society.
Furthermore, being kind to orphans is not limited to material assistance. It also includes providing emotional support, guidance, and mentorship. By being a positive role model and offering them guidance, we can help shape their character and nurture their potential. This act of kindness extends beyond the immediate needs of orphans and contributes to their long-term well-being and success.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being kind to orphans as one of the best righteous acts. By fulfilling this duty, we follow the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and embody the teachings of the Quran. Being kind to orphans not only brings us closer to Allah but also has a profound impact on the lives of those in need. Let us strive to be compassionate and supportive towards orphans, fulfilling our duty as Muslims and embodying the noble qualities of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble family. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to show kindness and compassion to those in need.
