Acquisitions are the spoils of disasters.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Acquisitions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "القنية نهب الأحداث" which translates to

Acquisitions are the spoils of disasters.

This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds deep wisdom and can be understood in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (al-qunya) "القنية" refers to "acquisitions" or "gains" that one obtains. It signifies the material possessions or wealth that individuals accumulate throughout their lives. On the other hand, the word (nahb) "نهب" means "spoils" or "booty" that is obtained from a disaster or calamity. It implies that these acquisitions are gained as a result of difficult or unfortunate circumstances.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 90:4)

And We have certainly created man into hardship

This verse highlights the reality of life, which is filled with trials and tribulations. It is through these hardships that individuals are tested and have the opportunity to grow and develop.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient

This verse emphasizes that disasters and losses, including the loss of wealth, are inevitable tests that individuals will face in their lives.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

Acquisitions are the spoils of disasters,

sheds light on the profound wisdom behind these Quranic teachings. It implies that the acquisitions or gains we obtain in life are often a result of the difficulties and challenges we face. Just as spoils are obtained from a disaster, our material possessions are often acquired through the hardships we endure.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the consequences of their actions and the motivations behind their pursuit of wealth. It encourages individuals to be mindful of the source and means through which they acquire their possessions. If one's acquisitions are gained through dishonesty, exploitation, or unethical practices, then they are akin to spoils obtained from disasters.

On the other hand, if one's acquisitions are gained through hard work, perseverance, and lawful means, then they can be seen as a reward for their efforts. It is important for Muslims to strive for halal (lawful) earnings and to be conscious of the ethical implications of their actions.

Moreover, this Hadith also teaches us the importance of gratitude and contentment in our lives. While it is natural to desire material possessions, we should not become attached to them or let them define our happiness. Instead, we should focus on developing our character, seeking knowledge, and performing good deeds that will benefit us in this life and the hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

Acquisitions are the spoils of disasters,

reminds us of the transient nature of material possessions and the importance of ethical conduct in acquiring wealth. It encourages Muslims to reflect upon the source and means through which they obtain their acquisitions and to strive for lawful earnings. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for gratitude and contentment, reminding us that true success lies in the development of our character and the performance of righteous deeds. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
