Verily the most honourable of all people is one who loses hope [in others], espouses contentment and piety and is devoid of greed and covetousness, for indeed covetousness and greed are a ready indigence and verily loss of hope [in others] and contentment are a manifest affluence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Loss Of Hope)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the qualities that make a person truly honorable and noble in the sight of Allah. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating that the most honorable of all people is the one who loses hope in others. This does not mean losing hope in Allah's mercy or help, but rather, it refers to losing hope in the assistance and support of people. This person relies solely on Allah and does not depend on others for their success or well-being.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then mentions two virtues that this honorable person possesses: contentment and piety. Contentment is the state of being satisfied with what Allah has decreed for us, without constantly desiring more or comparing ourselves to others. It is the opposite of greed and covetousness, which Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against.
To understand the significance of these qualities, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah has already decreed what is best for us, and we should be content with His provisions. Greed and covetousness, on the other hand, lead to dissatisfaction and a constant desire for more, which can burden the soul and lead to spiritual and emotional distress.
In Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah says:
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of relying on Allah alone and seeking His sustenance. When we are content with what Allah has given us and rely on Him, we will find peace and tranquility in our hearts.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that covetousness and greed are a form of indigence, meaning that they make a person spiritually and emotionally poor. When we constantly desire more and are never satisfied, we become enslaved to our desires and lose sight of the blessings that Allah has already bestowed upon us. This state of constant craving and longing can never bring true fulfillment or happiness.
On the other hand, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that loss of hope in others and contentment are a manifest affluence. When we let go of our expectations from people and place our trust in Allah, we experience a sense of freedom and inner richness. Contentment allows us to appreciate the blessings we have and find joy in the present moment, rather than constantly chasing after what we do not have.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of losing hope in others and relying solely on Allah. It emphasizes the virtues of contentment and piety, while warning against the pitfalls of greed and covetousness. By cultivating these qualities, we can attain true honor and nobility in the sight of Allah. May Allah guide us all to embody these virtues and grant us the strength to overcome our desires and find contentment in His blessings.
