(Ghurar al-Hikam: Faith)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Faith is sincerity in action.

Let us delve into the essence of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (Iman) "إيمان" in Arabic refers to faith or belief. It encompasses not only the belief in the existence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also the conviction in His Oneness and the acceptance of His guidance. It is a comprehensive concept that encompasses both belief and action.

The word (Ikhlas) "إخلاص" means sincerity or purity. It signifies the act of doing something solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without any ulterior motives or desires for personal gain or recognition. It is a state of being completely devoted to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all our actions.

The word (Amal) "عَمَل" refers to action or deed. It encompasses all the actions that we perform in our daily lives, whether they are acts of worship, such as prayer and fasting, or acts of kindness and charity towards others. Our faith should be reflected in our actions, as they are a manifestation of our inner beliefs.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our actions in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:61),

And they have been commanded no more than this: to worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to give Zakat. And that is the religion right and straight.

This verse highlights the significance of sincerity in worship and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It emphasizes that our actions should be performed solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without any hidden agendas or desires for worldly gains.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give Zakah. And that is the correct religion.

This verse reinforces the idea that sincerity is an essential component of true faith. It emphasizes that our worship should be directed solely towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without associating any partners with Him. It also highlights the importance of adhering to the truth and fulfilling our obligations, such as prayer and charity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully encapsulates the essence of faith in this Hadith. He reminds us that true faith is not merely a matter of belief or verbal affirmation, but it is reflected in our actions. Our deeds should be performed sincerely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), with no hidden motives or desires for personal gain.

When we strive to embody this sincerity in our actions, it has profound implications on our lives. It purifies our intentions and strengthens our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It motivates us to perform our duties with excellence and to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone. It also inspires others and sets an example for them to follow.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that faith is not confined to mere belief, but it encompasses sincerity in action. It reminds us to purify our intentions and to perform our deeds solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can attain a higher level of spirituality and strengthen our relationship with our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody this sincerity in all aspects of our lives.
