Hadith #769

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of brotherhood and emphasizes two key aspects: good companionship and providing support during times of financial difficulty. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (jamal) "جَمالُ" in the Hadith refers to the embellishment or beauty of brotherhood. It signifies that brotherhood is not merely a superficial bond, but rather something that adds beauty and grace to our lives. This beauty is achieved through (ihsan al-ashra) "إحسانُ العِشْرَةِ", which translates to good companionship. It implies treating one another with kindness, respect, and sincerity, and going beyond the minimum requirements of brotherhood.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good companionship in the Quran. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah says, (Quran 18:28)

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.

This verse encourages Muslims to surround themselves with righteous companions who remind them of Allah and strive for His pleasure. Such companionship not only strengthens our faith but also enhances the beauty of brotherhood.

The second aspect highlighted in the Hadith is (al-muwasat ma'a al-'usra) "المُواساةُ معَ العُسْرَةِ", which means providing support during times of financial difficulty. This teaches us the importance of standing by our brothers and sisters when they are facing financial hardships. It is a call to show compassion, empathy, and generosity towards those in need.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of helping others, especially during times of difficulty. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:195)

And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good.

This verse encourages Muslims to spend from their wealth for the sake of Allah and to support those who are in need. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty towards our brothers and sisters but also strengthen the bonds of brotherhood.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified these teachings throughout his life. His knowledge, wisdom, and compassion made him a role model for all Muslims. He was known for his generosity and willingness to support others, even when he himself faced financial difficulties. His actions were guided by the Quranic teachings of brotherhood and compassion.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that true brotherhood is not limited to mere words or superficial gestures. It requires us to actively engage in good companionship and to support one another during times of difficulty. By doing so, we not only enhance the beauty of brotherhood but also strengthen the bonds of our Muslim community.
