(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forgetting Allah)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Whoever forgets Allah, He makes him forget himself.

This thought-provoking saying highlights the importance of remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (nasiya) "نَسِيَ", which means "to forget" in Arabic. Forgetting Allah refers to neglecting His remembrance, not giving Him the attention and reverence that He deserves. When a person becomes engrossed in worldly matters and distances themselves from the remembrance of Allah, they lose sight of their true purpose and identity. They become disconnected from their spiritual essence and are more prone to succumbing to their desires and ego.

The consequence of forgetting Allah is that He makes the person forget themselves. This means that when one neglects the remembrance of Allah, they lose touch with their true nature, their purpose in life, and their moral compass. They become immersed in the materialistic world, chasing after temporary pleasures and forgetting the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. They become slaves to their desires and whims, losing sight of their higher self and the potential for spiritual growth.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the significance of remembering Allah and the consequences of forgetting Him. In Surah Al-Jumu'ah, Allah says, (62:9)

O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.

This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing the remembrance of Allah over worldly pursuits. It reminds us that true success lies in connecting with our Creator and seeking His pleasure.

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of forgetting Allah is found in Surah Al-Hashr. Allah says, (59:19)

And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.

This verse serves as a warning to those who neglect the remembrance of Allah and indulge in disobedience. It reminds us that forgetting Allah leads to a loss of self-awareness and a deviation from the path of righteousness.

When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that forgetting Allah has profound implications on our lives. It leads to a spiritual void, a disconnection from our true purpose, and a vulnerability to the temptations of this world. Conversely, remembering Allah and constantly being in His remembrance brings about tranquility, guidance, and a sense of purpose.

To avoid forgetting Allah, we must strive to establish a strong connection with Him through regular acts of worship, such as prayer, recitation of the Quran, and supplication. We should also engage in constant remembrance of Allah throughout our day, seeking His guidance and seeking His forgiveness for our shortcomings. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the perils of forgetting Allah and ensure that our hearts remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering Allah in our lives. Forgetting Allah leads to a loss of self-awareness and a deviation from our true purpose. By constantly remembering Allah and seeking His guidance, we can safeguard ourselves from the pitfalls of this world and strive towards spiritual growth and fulfillment. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him always and to never forget our true selves.
