Hadith #309

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The beauty of destitution is chastity and the beauty of riches is gratefulness.

This enlightening Hadith highlights the virtues of two contrasting states: poverty and wealth.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The term (afaaf) "عَفَافُ" refers to chastity, purity, and modesty. It signifies a state of being free from impurities and sins. (zeenatu) "زِينَةُ" means beauty or adornment, which implies that chastity is an attribute that enhances and beautifies the state of destitution. Similarly, the word (shukr) "شُّكْرُ" means gratitude or thankfulness, and (ghina) "غِنَى" refers to wealth or richness. Thus, gratefulness is portrayed as an adornment that beautifies the state of affluence.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Insan (76:9),

Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.

This verse emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon reminders and extracting lessons from them. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to contemplate the virtues of chastity and gratitude in different circumstances.

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.

Furthermore, the Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the correlation between gratitude and blessings. By expressing gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us, we invite more blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that wealth is not merely measured by material possessions, but rather by the gratefulness one possesses.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims in both states of destitution and affluence. In times of poverty, it encourages us to maintain our chastity and integrity, reminding us that these qualities are more valuable than material wealth. It teaches us that even in the face of adversity, we should strive to uphold our moral values and remain steadfast in our faith.

On the other hand, in times of wealth and abundance, this Hadith reminds us to be grateful to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings. Gratitude is not limited to expressing thanks with words, but it also encompasses using our wealth and resources in a manner that pleases Allah. By acknowledging and appreciating the blessings we have been granted, we can avoid arrogance and greed, and instead use our wealth to benefit others and fulfill our responsibilities towards society.
