(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the immense blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in this worldly life, while also emphasizing that these blessings pale in comparison to the blessings of the Hereafter. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The Arabic word (niʿamah) "نِعَمَ" in this Hadith refers to blessings or favors. It encompasses all the bounties and favors that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation. These blessings can be both material and spiritual, encompassing health, wealth, knowledge, guidance, and countless other forms of goodness that we experience in this world.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by acknowledging the greatness of Allah's blessings in this world. Indeed, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has showered us with numerous blessings, from the air we breathe to the sustenance we consume, from the beauty of nature to the love and companionship of our family and friends. These blessings are a manifestation of Allah's mercy and generosity towards His creation.

However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then contrasts these worldly blessings with the blessings of the Hereafter. He describes the blessings of the Hereafter as being far greater in magnitude and significance compared to the blessings of this world. This serves as a reminder to Muslims that the true and everlasting rewards lie in the Hereafter, and the temporary pleasures of this world should not distract us from striving for the eternal blessings of the Hereafter.

The Quran provides us with several verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46):

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that although wealth and children may be considered blessings in this world, they are merely temporary adornments. The true blessings lie in the enduring good deeds that we perform, which will be rewarded in the Hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.

This verse encourages us to seek the blessings of the Hereafter while also acknowledging the importance of fulfilling our worldly responsibilities. It reminds us to strike a balance between the two, prioritizing the eternal rewards over the temporary pleasures of this world.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the transience of this worldly life and the importance of focusing on the Hereafter. It serves as a call to prioritize our actions and intentions, ensuring that we strive for the eternal blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than being solely preoccupied with the fleeting pleasures of this world.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, imparts this valuable lesson to Muslims. His words serve as a reminder to constantly evaluate our priorities and strive for the ultimate goal of attaining the blessings of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and guidance to live our lives in accordance with His will and to seek His eternal blessings.
