(Ghurar al-Hikam: Deprivation And Frustration)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لاتَحْرِمِ المُضْطَرَّ وإنْ أسْرَفَ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of not depriving the distressed, even if they are extravagant. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (mudhtar) "مُضْطَرَّ" in this Hadith refers to someone who is in a state of distress, hardship, or need. It encompasses those who are facing financial difficulties, physical ailments, emotional turmoil, or any other form of adversity. It is a call to show compassion and empathy towards those who are in dire circumstances and require assistance.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of helping the needy and the distressed in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:177)

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse highlights the selflessness and sincerity with which Muslims should provide for those in need, without expecting anything in return.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah states, (17:29)

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

This verse warns against being excessively stingy or excessively generous. It encourages moderation in spending and highlights the importance of balancing our resources to fulfill our obligations towards others while also taking care of our own needs.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us that even if someone is extravagant or wasteful in their spending, it does not justify depriving them of assistance when they are in distress. This teaching is rooted in the principles of compassion, mercy, and justice that Islam upholds.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that our duty as Muslims is to help those in need, regardless of their past actions or behavior. Our focus should be on alleviating their suffering and providing them with the necessary support to overcome their difficulties. By doing so, we embody the spirit of Islam and follow the example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions.

It is important to note that this Hadith does not encourage enabling or supporting someone's extravagant lifestyle. Rather, it emphasizes the obligation to assist those in distress, even if they have made poor choices in the past. By extending our help to them, we may inspire positive change in their lives and guide them towards a more balanced and responsible approach to their resources.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to show compassion and empathy towards the distressed, regardless of their circumstances or past actions. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of helping those in need and promoting justice and mercy in society. Let us strive to embody these principles in our daily lives and be a source of support and comfort for those who are facing hardships. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and enable us to be a source of relief for the distressed.
