The best portion of a person is his intellect, if he gets humiliated it restores his honour, if he falls it raises him, if he goes astray it guides him and if he talks it directs him.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of intellect and its impact on a person's life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the best portion of a person is his intellect. This highlights the importance of rational thinking, wisdom, and understanding in the life of a Muslim.

The word (hazz) "حَظِّ" in the Hadith refers to the portion or share of something. In this context, it signifies the most valuable and beneficial aspect of a person. The word (aqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ" refers to the intellect or reasoning ability of an individual. It is the faculty that enables a person to think, comprehend, and make sound judgments.

To further understand the significance of intellect, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:22)

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason

This verse highlights the importance of intellect in distinguishing humans from other creatures and emphasizes its role in pleasing Allah.

The Hadith also mentions that if a person gets humiliated, their intellect restores their honor. This means that when faced with humiliation or disgrace, a person's intellect enables them to regain their dignity and self-respect. It empowers them to analyze the situation, learn from their mistakes, and take appropriate actions to rectify their circumstances.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 17:70)

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference

This verse highlights the inherent honor and dignity bestowed upon every human being by Allah, and it is through the use of intellect that one can reclaim and maintain their honor.

Furthermore, the Hadith states that if a person falls, their intellect raises them. This means that when faced with setbacks or failures, a person's intellect enables them to rise above their circumstances. It allows them to reflect on their mistakes, learn valuable lessons, and strive for improvement. Through the power of intellect, one can overcome obstacles and achieve success.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us, (Quran 65:2-3)

And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent

This verse highlights the importance of relying on Allah and utilizing our intellect to find solutions and opportunities even in the face of adversity.

The Hadith also mentions that if a person goes astray, their intellect guides them. This means that when a person deviates from the right path, their intellect serves as a guiding light, leading them back to the straight path. It enables them to recognize their mistakes, seek knowledge, and seek guidance from the teachings of Islam.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 17:9)

Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward

This verse emphasizes the role of the Quran, which is the ultimate source of guidance for Muslims. Through the use of intellect, one can understand and apply the teachings of the Quran to navigate through life's challenges and stay on the right path.

Lastly, the Hadith states that if a person talks, their intellect directs them. This means that when a person speaks, their intellect guides them to choose their words wisely and speak with clarity and purpose. It reminds us of the importance of effective communication and the impact our words can have on others.

The Quran advises us, (Quran 2:83)

And speak to people good [words]

This verse encourages Muslims to use their intellect to communicate in a manner that is respectful, kind, and beneficial. It reminds us that our words have the power to inspire, educate, and bring about positive change.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of intellect in a person's life. It emphasizes that intellect is the best portion of a person, as it enables them to restore their honor, rise above setbacks, find guidance when astray, and communicate effectively. By utilizing our intellect and seeking guidance from the Quran, we can navigate through life's challenges and strive for success in both this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with wisdom and understanding and enable us to use our intellect in a manner that pleases Him.
