أجْهَلُ النّاسِ مُسِيئٌ مُسْتَأنِفٌ۔
An unremorseful sinner is the most ignorant person.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أجْهَلُ النّاسِ مُسِيئٌ مُسْتَأنِفٌ۔
This can be translated as,
An unremorseful sinner is the most ignorant person.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (ajhal) "أجْهَلُ" refers to someone who is ignorant or lacking knowledge. It signifies a state of being unaware or uninformed about the truth. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the ignorance of a particular group of people - those who persist in their sinful actions without any remorse or regret.
The term (musi'un) "مُسِيئٌ" refers to a person who commits sins or engages in wrongful actions. This includes both major and minor sins, as any act that goes against the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is considered a sin. It is important to note that everyone is prone to committing sins, but what distinguishes individuals is their response to their own wrongdoing.
The word (musta'anif) "مُسْتَأنِفٌ" refers to someone who persists in their sinful behavior without any remorse or repentance. This person is unapologetic and continues to commit sins without seeking forgiveness or rectifying their actions. They are heedless of the consequences of their actions and do not feel the need to change their ways.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and repentance throughout the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 24:31)
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed
This verse highlights the necessity of repentance for attaining success in both this world and the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah states, (Quran 2:222)
Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves
This verse emphasizes the importance of constantly seeking forgiveness and purifying oneself from sins. It highlights the significance of remorse and repentance in the eyes of Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us that a person who persists in their sinful behavior without any remorse or repentance is the epitome of ignorance. Such an individual fails to recognize the gravity of their actions and the consequences they may face in this life and the Hereafter. They are oblivious to the mercy and forgiveness of Allah, and they disregard the opportunity for spiritual growth and purification.
This Hadith serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims. It urges us to constantly reflect upon our actions and seek forgiveness for our sins. It reminds us that true knowledge lies in recognizing our mistakes, feeling remorse, and striving to rectify our behavior. By doing so, we can attain spiritual growth, strengthen our relationship with Allah, and ultimately attain success in both this world and the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that an unremorseful sinner is the most ignorant person. It emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and repentance for our sins, as highlighted in the Quran. May Allah guide us all to constantly reflect upon our actions, seek forgiveness, and strive for spiritual growth.
