Hadith #9723

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما حَمَلَ الرَّجُلُ حَمْلاً أثْقَلَ مِنَ المُرُوَّةِ۔

This Hadith is translated as,

Nobody has carried a burden heavier than magnanimity.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (hamala) "حَمْلَ" means to carry or bear a burden. (ar-rajulu) "الرَّجُلُ" refers to a man. (hamlan) "حَمْلاً" signifies a burden, and (athqala) "أثْقَلَ" means heavier or more burdensome. Finally, (al-muruwwah) "المُرُوَّةِ" translates to magnanimity or generosity.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 41:33)

And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, 'Indeed, I am of the Muslims.'

This verse highlights the importance of inviting others to the path of Allah and doing righteous deeds.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified this through his magnanimity and generosity. He carried the burden of spreading the message of Islam and guiding people towards righteousness. His actions and words were a testament to his unwavering commitment to Allah's commandments.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:29)

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

This verse emphasizes the importance of moderation and balance in our actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) carried the burden of magnanimity with utmost balance and wisdom. He displayed generosity without becoming insolvent or burdening himself beyond his means. His actions were guided by the teachings of the Quran, and he set an example for Muslims to follow.

The consequences of carrying the burden of magnanimity are far-reaching. When a person embodies generosity and kindness, they inspire others to do the same. Their actions create a ripple effect, spreading goodness and compassion in society.
