ثَمَرَةُ التَّفْريطِ مَلامَةٌ۔
The fruit of neglect is censure.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Neglect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "ثَمَرَةُ التَّفْريطِ مَلامَةٌ۔" which translates to
The fruit of neglect is censure.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in all aspects of their lives.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (thamaratu) "ثَمَرَةُ" refers to the fruit or consequence of an action. It signifies the outcome or result that emerges from a particular behavior or attitude. The word (tafreet) "التَّفْريطِ" refers to neglect, carelessness, or excessive indulgence. It implies a lack of moderation and balance in one's actions or responsibilities. Finally, the word (malamah) "مَلامَةٌ" means censure or blame, indicating the disapproval or criticism that arises due to neglectful behavior.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:23):
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities towards our parents and treating them with kindness and respect. Neglecting this duty can lead to censure and disapproval from both Allah and society. Similarly, neglecting any other obligation, whether it be in our relationships, work, or worship, can result in negative consequences and criticism.
Another verse that resonates with the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18):
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse reminds us to be mindful of our actions and their consequences. Neglecting our duties and responsibilities can lead to regret and censure in this life and the hereafter. It is essential to constantly evaluate our actions and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the importance of being diligent and responsible in fulfilling our obligations. Neglecting our duties not only affects our own well-being but also has an impact on those around us. It can lead to strained relationships, missed opportunities, and a tarnished reputation.
For example, neglecting our studies can result in poor academic performance and limited career prospects. Neglecting our health can lead to various ailments and a diminished quality of life. Neglecting our spiritual development can distance us from Allah and hinder our journey towards righteousness.
On the other hand, being mindful and proactive in fulfilling our responsibilities brings about positive outcomes. It fosters personal growth, strengthens relationships, and earns the respect and admiration of others. It allows us to lead a balanced and purposeful life, guided by the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of avoiding neglect and carelessness in our actions and responsibilities. It serves as a powerful reminder that neglecting our duties can result in censure and disapproval. By being diligent and responsible, we can cultivate a life of purpose, productivity, and righteousness. May Allah guide us all to fulfill our obligations and protect us from the consequences of neglect.
