The one who enters hellfire is forever wretched.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hell Fire)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

وارِدُ النّارِ مَؤَبَّدُ الشَّقاءِ۔

This can be translated as,

The one who enters hellfire is forever wretched.

In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the eternal and everlasting nature of the torment and misery experienced by those who enter the hellfire.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the eternal nature of the punishment in the hereafter for those who reject faith and commit evil deeds. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:161-162)

Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - upon them will be the curse of Allah and of the angels and the people, all together, abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved

This ayah clearly highlights the everlasting nature of the punishment for those who die in a state of disbelief. They will be cursed by Allah, the angels, and all of humanity, and they will remain in the hellfire for eternity. This eternal punishment serves as a warning to all Muslims, reminding us of the consequences of turning away from the path of righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Bayyinah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 98:6)

Indeed, those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures

This verse emphasizes that the disbelievers, regardless of their background or beliefs, will be confined to the hellfire forever. It is a stern reminder that the consequences of disbelief are severe and everlasting.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the gravity of the punishment that awaits those who enter the hellfire. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for righteousness, to avoid sin, and to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of their lives. It motivates us to reflect on our actions and the consequences they may have in the hereafter.

The consequences of entering the hellfire are not limited to the physical torment experienced in the afterlife. They extend to the spiritual and emotional anguish that will forever plague the inhabitants of the hellfire. The wretchedness mentioned in the Hadith encompasses the regret, remorse, and despair that will consume those who are condemned to eternal damnation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful saying serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly strive for righteousness, seeking forgiveness for our sins and repenting sincerely. It urges us to reflect on the consequences of our actions and to seek the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to avoid the eternal wretchedness of the hellfire.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the torment of the hellfire and guide us towards the path of righteousness. May He grant us the strength and wisdom to avoid actions that lead to eternal wretchedness. May we constantly seek His forgiveness and mercy, and may He shower us with His infinite blessings and grace.
