Hadith #1784

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "آفَةُ الجُودِ الفَقْرُ۔" This translates to,

The bane of generosity is poverty.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (joodi) "جُودِ" in this Hadith refers to the act of being generous and giving abundantly. It encompasses the concept of selflessness, kindness, and the willingness to share one's blessings with others. The word (faqru) "فَقْرُ" means poverty, which signifies a state of lacking material wealth or resources.

To understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the immense rewards and blessings that come with generosity. When we give selflessly, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) multiplies our blessings and increases our provisions. It is a means of attaining spiritual growth and strengthening our relationship with Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's support and assistance in all our endeavors. When we are generous, we are demonstrating our reliance on Allah and seeking His help in overcoming any potential hardships or difficulties.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the potential consequences of excessive generosity without proper planning and consideration. While generosity is highly encouraged in Islam, it is essential to strike a balance and not neglect our own well-being and responsibilities.
