(Ghurar al-Hikam: Prayer And One Who Stands For Prayer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights his profound understanding of the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for any wrongdoing committed. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (wrongdoing) "ذَنْبٌ", (given time) "أُمْهِلْتُ", and (offer two units of prayer) "أُصَلِّيَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ". The word "ذَنْبٌ" refers to any sin or transgression committed by an individual. "أُمْهِلْتُ" signifies being granted a period of time or respite before the consequences of the wrongdoing manifest. "أُصَلِّيَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ" refers to the act of offering two units of prayer, which is a means of seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and turning to Him in repentance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 222, Allah says,

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.

This Ayah highlights the significance of seeking forgiveness and purifying oneself from sins.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, Ayah 56, Allah states,

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.

This Ayah emphasizes the need to seek forgiveness and invoke Allah with fear and hope, recognizing His mercy and proximity to those who do good.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. He expresses that he is not worried about a wrongdoing for which he is given time to offer two units of prayer and seek forgiveness. This statement reflects Imam Ali's deep understanding of the power of repentance and the mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we commit a sin, we should not despair or be overwhelmed by guilt. Instead, we should seize the opportunity to seek forgiveness and rectify our actions through sincere repentance. By offering two units of prayer and seeking forgiveness, we acknowledge our wrongdoing, express remorse, and seek Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

This Hadith also highlights the importance of taking immediate action to seek forgiveness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the urgency of offering the two units of prayer as soon as possible, without delay. This teaches us that we should not procrastinate in seeking forgiveness, but rather hasten to rectify our mistakes and seek Allah's forgiveness promptly.

The motivation behind Imam Ali's statement is his deep knowledge and understanding of Allah's mercy and forgiveness. He recognizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the Most Merciful and Forgiving, and that He eagerly awaits the repentance of His servants. Imam Ali's words serve as a reminder to Muslims that no matter how grave our sins may be, Allah's mercy is always within reach if we sincerely seek His forgiveness.

The consequence of following Imam Ali's advice is the attainment of spiritual purification and a closer connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By seeking forgiveness and rectifying our actions, we cleanse our souls and strengthen our relationship with our Creator. This leads to inner peace, contentment, and a sense of spiritual growth.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for our wrongdoings. It reminds us that no matter how grave our sins may be, we should never lose hope in Allah's mercy and forgiveness. By offering two units of prayer and seeking forgiveness sincerely, we can purify our souls, strengthen our relationship with Allah, and attain spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek forgiveness and rectify our actions, and may He shower His mercy upon us.
