(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كَثْرَةُ الصَّمْتِ تُكْسِبُكَ الوَقارَ۔

This can be translated as

Increased silence earns you reverence.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.

The word (kasratu) "كَثْرَةُ" means abundance or increase. It emphasizes the importance of practicing silence frequently and consistently. The term (as-samt) "الصَّمْتِ" refers to silence or refraining from speaking. It implies restraining oneself from unnecessary speech or idle talk. Finally, (al-waqar) "الوَقارَ" denotes reverence, dignity, or honor.

Silence is a virtue that is highly regarded in Islam. It is a means of self-control and discipline, allowing one to reflect and ponder upon their words before uttering them. The more one practices silence, the more they cultivate a sense of reverence and dignity within themselves. This reverence is not only towards others, but also towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the significance of silence and its connection to reverence. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:205), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

This verse encourages us to remember Allah silently, with humility and fear, without the need for verbal expression. It highlights the importance of internal reflection and contemplation.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises the Prophet Muhammad (),

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.

This verse teaches us the virtue of patience and avoiding unnecessary arguments or disputes. It encourages us to maintain our dignity and composure by choosing silence over engaging in futile debates.

The exegesis of this Hadith teaches us that practicing silence not only earns us reverence from others but also enhances our own self-respect and dignity. When we refrain from speaking unnecessarily, we demonstrate wisdom, self-control, and thoughtfulness. This silence allows us to reflect upon our words and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam.

Silence also enables us to listen attentively to others, fostering better understanding and empathy. It allows us to absorb knowledge and wisdom from those around us, including our elders, scholars, and teachers. By being silent, we create an atmosphere of respect and honor, both for ourselves and for others.

Moreover, silence can protect us from the harmful consequences of loose speech. It prevents us from engaging in gossip, backbiting, and spreading rumors, which are all condemned in Islam. By practicing silence, we avoid causing harm to others and maintain a positive and peaceful environment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of silence in earning reverence. By practicing silence, we cultivate a sense of dignity and honor within ourselves, while also fostering respect from others. The Quranic verses mentioned support this concept by emphasizing the importance of internal reflection, patience, and avoiding futile arguments. As Muslims, let us strive to increase our silence and earn the reverence that comes with it, both in the eyes of Allah and our fellow human beings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to practice silence and uphold our dignity.
