اَلإيمانُ صَبْرٌ في البَلاءِ، وشُكْرٌ في الرَّخاءِ۔
Faith is patience in tribulation and gratitude in ease.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Faith)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Faith is patience in tribulation and gratitude in ease.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word "faith" in this Hadith refers to the core belief and conviction in the existence and oneness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses the belief in His attributes, His guidance through the Prophets, and the acceptance of His decree. Faith is the foundation upon which a Muslim builds their entire life, seeking to please Allah and attain His pleasure.
The word (صَبْرٌ) "patience" in this Hadith is a key concept emphasized throughout the Quran. Patience is the ability to endure and remain steadfast in the face of trials and tribulations. It is not a passive acceptance of difficulties, but rather an active response that involves perseverance, fortitude, and trust in Allah's wisdom and plan. The Quran repeatedly encourages Muslims to be patient in times of hardship, assuring them of the rewards that await those who remain steadfast.
Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155-157),
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
The word (شُكْرٌ) "gratitude" in this Hadith refers to expressing appreciation and thankfulness to Allah for His blessings. Gratitude is not limited to material wealth or comfort; it encompasses recognizing and acknowledging the countless blessings bestowed upon us, both apparent and hidden. Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of faith, as it reflects humility, contentment, and recognition of Allah's favor upon us.
Allah says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully encapsulates the essence of faith by highlighting the importance of patience during times of tribulation and gratitude during times of ease. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to maintain their faith and trust in Allah regardless of their circumstances.
In times of tribulation, patience enables us to navigate through challenges with resilience and hope. It allows us to maintain our composure, seek solace in prayer, and rely on Allah's guidance. Patience helps us grow spiritually, develop inner strength, and ultimately attain a higher level of faith.
Similarly, in times of ease and prosperity, gratitude serves as a shield against arrogance and complacency. It reminds us that all blessings come from Allah and should be acknowledged and appreciated. Gratitude fosters contentment, prevents us from taking blessings for granted, and encourages us to share our blessings with others.
By embodying patience in tribulation and gratitude in ease, Muslims can cultivate a balanced and steadfast faith. This Hadith encourages us to reflect on our own lives, assess our reactions to different situations, and strive to align our actions with the teachings of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to embody patience and gratitude in all aspects of our lives, and may He bless us with unwavering faith.
