(Ghurar al-Hikam: Steadfastness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who remains steadfast is not bereft of safety.

Let us delve into the exegesis of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.

The word (lazima) "لَزِمَ" in Arabic means to adhere to, to hold fast, or to remain steadfast. It implies a continuous commitment and dedication to a particular course of action. The word (istiqamah) "اِسْتِقامَةَ" refers to righteousness, uprightness, and steadfastness on the straight path of Islam. It signifies a state of being consistent and unwavering in one's faith and actions.

To understand the significance of steadfastness, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:200),

O you who have believed, be steadfast and strive in patience and be constant and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of remaining steadfast in the face of challenges and hardships, as it leads to success in both this world and the Hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Hud (11:112), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

So be patient, for indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.

This verse highlights the need for patience and steadfastness in times of trials, as the ultimate fulfillment of Allah's promises lies in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that remaining steadfast on the path of righteousness ensures safety and protection from harm. This steadfastness is not limited to physical safety but encompasses spiritual, emotional, and intellectual well-being as well.

When a Muslim remains steadfast in their faith and actions, they are shielded from the harmful influences of sin, doubt, and deviation. They are protected from the negative consequences of immoral choices and are guided towards the path of righteousness. This steadfastness brings inner peace, contentment, and tranquility to the believer's heart.

Moreover, remaining steadfast in the face of adversity and challenges strengthens one's character and increases their resilience. It cultivates a sense of determination, perseverance, and trust in Allah's guidance and mercy. The example of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is a testament to the rewards of steadfastness. Despite facing numerous trials, he remained unwavering in his faith and was eventually honored as the "Friend of Allah."

Conversely, those who waver in their commitment to righteousness and succumb to the temptations of this world expose themselves to various dangers. They risk falling into sin, losing their moral compass, and straying from the path of guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Hajj (22:11),

And among the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of steadfastness in the path of righteousness. It serves as a reminder that remaining committed to the principles of Islam and upholding moral values leads to safety and protection in all aspects of life. By drawing inspiration from the Quranic verses that encourage steadfastness, Muslims can strive to cultivate this noble quality and reap its abundant rewards. May Allah grant us the strength and guidance to remain steadfast and steadfastness in our faith and actions.
