سَبَبُ التَّدْميرِ سُوءُ التَّدبيرِ (سُوءُ التَّدبيرِ سَبَبُ التَّدْمير)۔
The cause of ruin is bad planning.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Planning)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
سَبَبُ التَّدْميرِ سُوءُ التَّدبيرِ
which translates to
The cause of ruin is bad planning.
This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of proper planning and organization in avoiding destruction and achieving success.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us examine the key words used. The word (tadmeer) "تَدْمِير" means ruin or destruction, while (soo) "سُوء" refers to something that is bad or evil. And (tadbir) "تَدْبِير" means planning or management.
The importance of planning and foresight is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30),
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
This verse demonstrates that even in the face of adversity, proper planning is crucial. The disbelievers conspired against the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) with the intention of harming him, but Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) had a greater plan. It is a reminder to Muslims that no matter how well others may plan against them, Allah's plan will always prevail.
Another verse that supports the importance of planning is found in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse urges believers to be conscious of their actions and to plan for the future. It emphasizes the need for individuals to reflect on their deeds and make wise decisions, considering the consequences of their actions. By doing so, they can avoid ruin and destruction.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of proper planning in all aspects of life. Whether it is in personal matters, professional endeavors, or even in matters of faith, having a well-thought-out plan is essential for success.
For example, in personal matters, one should plan their time effectively to balance their responsibilities and obligations. By doing so, they can avoid being overwhelmed and ensure that they fulfill their duties to the best of their abilities.
In professional endeavors, proper planning is crucial for achieving goals and objectives. It involves setting clear targets, identifying potential challenges, and devising strategies to overcome them. Without a well-structured plan, individuals and organizations may face setbacks and fail to reach their desired outcomes.
In matters of faith, planning plays a significant role as well. Muslims are encouraged to plan their acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity, in order to maximize their spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By organizing their time and efforts, they can ensure that they fulfill their religious obligations and strive for excellence in their faith.
Furthermore, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the consequences of poor planning. When individuals or societies neglect proper planning, they open themselves up to chaos, confusion, and ultimately, ruin. This can be seen throughout history, where civilizations that lacked effective planning and governance faced downfall and destruction.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize proper planning and organization in all aspects of their lives. By reflecting on the consequences of poor planning and taking inspiration from the Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of foresight, Muslims can strive for success and avoid the path of ruin. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to plan effectively and seek His blessings in all our endeavors.
