(Ghurar al-Hikam: Tolerance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "تَحَمَّلْ يَجِلَّ قَدْرُكَ۔" This can be translated as,

Be tolerant, [and] your status will become lofty.

Let us delve into the profound wisdom and guidance contained within this statement, and explore its connection to the teachings of the Quran.

The word (tahammal) "تَحَمَّلْ" in the Hadith refers to the act of being patient, forbearing, and tolerant. It encompasses the ability to endure hardships, difficulties, and the shortcomings of others without losing composure or reacting negatively. It is a quality that requires inner strength, self-control, and a deep understanding of the greater purpose in life.

The word (yajilla) "يَجِلَّ" in the Hadith means to elevate, raise, or increase in status. It implies that by practicing tolerance and forbearance, one's position and honor will be elevated in the eyes of Allah and in the sight of people. This elevation is not merely in worldly terms, but also in terms of spiritual growth, inner peace, and the attainment of closeness to Allah.

The Quranic teachings emphasize the importance of patience and tolerance in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking Allah's assistance. By being patient and tolerant, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's wisdom and His ability to guide us through challenges.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse encourages believers to persevere and endure in the face of adversity, reminding us that true success lies in maintaining patience and steadfastness.

The exegesis of the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that practicing tolerance and forbearance leads to the elevation of our status. When we choose to respond to challenging situations with patience and understanding, we not only display the noble character of a true believer, but we also attract the mercy and blessings of Allah.

By remaining calm and composed in the face of difficulties, we inspire others to do the same. Our ability to forgive and overlook the faults of others fosters harmonious relationships and builds a sense of unity within the Muslim community. It is through these acts of tolerance that we create an environment of compassion, empathy, and mutual respect.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the qualities of patience and tolerance throughout his life. His ability to remain steadfast in the face of adversity, even during times of great tribulation, serves as an inspiration for all Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of practicing tolerance and forbearance in our daily lives. By embodying these qualities, we not only elevate our own status but also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to follow the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and may Allah grant us the strength to be patient and tolerant in all circumstances.
